[IE] Registry Fix For Restoring Hidden Sites On IE9 NewTab page.

Recommended Posts

Hi! Haven't seen anyone else post about this and didn't turn anything up in my web search for answers to this, so here we go.

about:Tabs aka the NewTabs page in Internet Explorer 9 shows "Your most popular sites" and allows you to choose to "Never show this site" for entries you don't want. But currently - using 9.0.8027.6000 - there is no way to bring them back through the GUI (but hopefully there will be in the RC/Final)!

Microsoft support has been telling people to reset all internet settings to accomplish this, but clearly that's like using a gun to open a can of soda.

A little poking around in the registry found the obvious answers in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing\NewTabPage

MFV should be left alone as it seems to reason that contains your Most Frequently Visited data, unless you want to clear that as well (I haven't tested it) but the Exclude subkey just holds a few short entries, likely references to the MFV database for each excluded entry. Removing them should bring the missing sites back to the list.

Long story short, for those who don't want to wait and see if this functionality is included in the RC/Final, this should do it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing\NewTabPage\Exclude]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing\NewTabPage\Exclude]
